ARTISTIC RESIDENCY

Migration as Liberation: Stories of Black Women from the Lusophone Diaspora

Artistic Residency in Lisbon will contribute to a book and podcast exploring the multiple dimensions of Blackness and the female condition

29 Dec - 19 Jan 2026

Christine Job's creative work focuses on the experiences of Black women at the intersections of migration, well-being, identity and liberation. Selected by KEF Portugal's Artistic Residency programme, Christine intends to interview Black women from Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Brazilians, Angolans and Cape Verdeans, during her stay at Casa Mísia in Lisbon. In her investigation, these are some of the questions that will guide her: What does Blackness mean in the Portuguese social, political and personal context? How do the histories of colonialism touch the lives of Black women in Portugal today? Do Black women in the diaspora understand migration as a strategy for well-being and freedom?

"Through these conversations, I want to explore the multiple dimensions of Blackness, the female condition and post-colonial migration, and also collect reflections on the growing migratory movement of Afro-American women to Portugal. These narratives will be integrated into my upcoming book Flourish in the Foreign: A Black Woman’s Guide to Cultivating a Life Well Lived and in a limited series of the podcast "Migration as Liberation: Black Women’s Love Stories", highlighting Portugal as a space of tensions but also of possibilities within the context of the global Black diaspora", she explains.

During her time in LisbonChristine will host a meeting at KEF with some of the women interviewed for her projects, opening the conversation on the themes of Blackness and migration in contemporary Portugal to the local community.
