Black Visibility on Wikipedia

Meeting promotes the editing of entries on Black female journalists

27 Sep 2025

On 27 September, the Wiki Editoras Lx (WELx), a feminist collective of Wikipedia editors dedicated to combating disparities in visibility and representation in the world's largest digital encyclopaedia, will promote the 4th Black Visibility Edit-a-thon. This year, it is dedicated to editing entries for Black female journalists. The curatorship is by BANTUMEN, represented by journalist Vanessa Sanches, editor and co-founder of this online platform aimed at Portuguese-speaking Afro-descendant communities.

The editors consider "editing entries for Black female journalists a fundamental action to correct historical gaps in recognition on Wikipedia, as many of these professionals, despite having relevant careers and producing a significant impact on social communication and the construction of narratives about their communities, remain erased or under-represented in this space".

In addition to creating and improving pages, inserting images and data to promote knowledge equity, the WELx initiative seeks to increase participation in the Wikimedia Movement by more people from under-represented communities in order to reduce biases and ensure greater plurality.

The event, open to women, trans and non-binary people, is free; participation is subject to registration.  Participants are requested to bring their laptop and charger. The organisers provide lunch and baby-sitting.
